Letter from a participant in the January 2024 Retreat.
First, I want to thank you for your understanding and support which gave me the opportunity to experience being with you and enjoying unconditional love from all of those who shared this heartfelt experience in St John.
As you knew, I have balance challenges that create many moments of being present as I stand or walk. You created a safe space for me filled with support and understanding from my first moments flying to St Thomas to my last moments leaving St Thomas.
Compassion is a feeling that surrounded my every moment I experienced living in the Concordia Eco Resort, your gentle teaching of yoga, and the relationships I experienced during meditation. I can still feel the moments of joy I felt when I polished myself by rock tumbling within waves with you and others as I laughed upon my arrival back to shore without a shoe that you recovered as it tumbled into the rocks. My first experience snorkeling and seeing the vastness of the ocean as I never had before which has opened new vistas for me to explore.
Your meditation practices opened me to exploring within myself more deeply and your consistent focus on bringing the practice to ourselves will stay with me. I loved the general practice but then coming back in small groups to listen to each other and then sharing as a whole circle opened my heart. I remember with absolute clarity the joy I felt looking at someone and feeling their beauty that is life-changing for me.
I will always remember the 72 steps and how you made that journey an opportunity by pointing out how I got to be in the moment as I experienced the beauty around me by stopping as I climbed or descended. Then as you watched me and suggested I bring my breakfast down with me for yoga so I would not have to climb the stairs again illustrates how you always watch out for the individual needs of each attendee.
Your organization was truly beyond what I thought possible. You provided opportunities for each individual but with clear support for their explorations. I loved experiencing the beauty of Concordia but also the different beaches and bays we explored. I wish I could have gone on the Reef Walk to see the petroglyphs first-hand but I had the joy of seeing them through the lenses of those who could hike the trail.
Eating together in the evening reinforced within me the joy and importance of breaking bread with each other. Celebrating the beauty of each day with the kindest people one could imagine and listening to the music you brought was just joyful. I loved our last meal together as we danced and then visited the bay to watch the full moon dance across the bay as I was supported by others as I walked to the shore.
Stretching is important to me and you taught me safe ways to engage my body increasing my core strength and balance through yoga. I felt stronger and appreciated how you created space within each movement for the differing levels of engagement within a safe and guided practice.
I wish I could express the way my heart was opened by each person at St John. I am forever thankful to you Kate and each person who shared this life-changing experience with me. Thank you my friends!
About St. John
St. John is the smallest of the 3 U.S. Virgin Islands, which are located in the Caribbean Sea. Virgin Islands National Park occupies more than half the island. Its forests shelter resident and migratory birds, including cuckoos, warblers and hummingbirds. The mangroves at Hurricane Hole, in the east, support corals and anemones. Dolphins inhabit the island’s waters, which also host hawksbill and green turtles.
About the Accommodations
Accommodations are single or double cottages with solar hot water and simple cooking facilities. There is a restaurant onsite along with a swimming pool and yoga pavilion. The resorts sits perched on a hillside with stellar views of the crystal blue water. A spectacular beach is a short walk down the hill from the cottages.
Solo travelers may request a roommate.
The Eco Units require that participants are able to do stairs.
How to get to Eco Resort
Book flights into St Thomas then taxi to the ferry which takes you to St John. If you arrive before 4 PM you can taxi to the Eco Resort at the end of the island. If you cannot arrive before 4 PM, you may want to come the day before and stay at the Emerald Beach Hotel, or the Limerick Hotel (both in Cruz Bay).
We suggest arriving a day early and staying overnight in St Thomas so you can take a morning ferry to St John. If you arrive before noon, transportation to Concordia will be provided. If you do not arrive before noon we can help arrange transportation but will not be able to provide.
